For us Chennai folks, Kollywood is an emotion. There is no life situation that cannot be explained with a Tamil movie dialogue, meme or song. Yes, we take Tamil movies way too seriously, and we will not apologize for it!

It is no secret that I am competitive, and so are many of my friends. We take all our games seriously, be it on the football field or when we are playing board games. Unsurprisingly, two of my team members married the love for Kollywood and the love for games and quizzing and created a new game that all of us love playing.

This was during my Freshworks days. Sanjeev NC and Praveen ‘Jammy’ Ramesh came up with this as just a game between 4 people. This became a team ritual first and then a company-wide phenomenon.

It is a simple game. The quizmaster plays interludes from a song and/or dialogues from a movie and people have to guess which song it is or which movie it is from. It is each person to his/her own. Participants have to shout out answers and whoever yells out the correct answer first wins the point. If someone wins 3 points in a row, they can’t play for two rounds just to ensure one individual doesn’t dominate the game and to keep it fun for everyone.

This game and the number of people playing it grew so much that we ended up booking conference rooms. We play this everyday for a week in ‘seasons’ and the season winner usually gets to host the next session. The winner also got a prize, which kept rotating within the group.

The banter, the sledging, the shouting, the arguments, and the noise is what makes this game such fun. There were times when people outside the conference room thought we were having a serious fight - that was the spirit.

The Kollywood song contest gave us a respite during the pandemic lockdown

In fact, when the pandemic hit and we were all cooped up indoors, we moved this game online. Every alternate Sunday, we all played the game online no matter where we were. I had friends getting out of a party in Canada and standing in the cold and joining in. All for a game.

But then, Kollywood is never just a game.
